Tuberculous uveitis: distribution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the retinal pigment epithelium.

چکیده
The diagnosis of intraocular tuberculosis has been a challenge until the introduction of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect the mycobacterial-specific DNA sequence in the intraocular fluids. Such investigations have confirmed diverse manifestations of intraocular tuberculosis including retinal vasculitis and serpiginouslike choroiditis. The latter may manifest with multifocal lesions involving the inner choroid, which coalesce to form a geographic pattern simulating serpiginous choroiditis. Although, clinically, the choroiditis appears to involve primarily the inner choroid and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), the presence of mycobacterium at these anatomic sites has not been documented. Herein, we describe a case of panuveitis that was clinically of unknown cause but for which histopathologic examination of the globe disclosed selective distribution of acid-fast organisms in the RPE. These were confirmed to be Mycobacterium tuberculosis by microdissection of the RPE, followed by real-time PCR.

A zebrafish model for ocular tuberculosis
Ocular tuberculosis (TB) commonly causes severe inflammation and vision loss in TB-endemic countries. The mechanism by which tuberculous infection becomes established in the eye is poorly understood. We have developed the zebrafish larva infected with Mycobacterium marinum as a model to study the early pathogenesis of ocular TB. We find that hematogenous bacterial seeding of the eye occurs desp...
متن کاملLocal Ischemia and Increased Expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Following Ocular Dissemination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis
The pathogenesis of intraocular tuberculosis remains poorly understood partly due to the lack of adequate animal models that accurately simulate human disease. Using a recently developed model of ocular tuberculosis following aerosol infection of guinea pigs with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, we studied the microbiological, histological, and clinical features of intraocular tuberculosis infection...
متن کاملMorphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor cells after transplantation of stem cells into subretinal space
Introduction: Degenerative retinal diseases are main cause of irreversible blindness. Stem cells therapy is a promising way in these diseases. Therefore, mesenchymal stem cells because of its safety can produce degenerated cells and can play important role in treatment. The aim of this study was to examine morphological changes in injured retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cells...
متن کاملHistochemical study of retinal photoreceptors development during pre- and postnatal period and their association with retinal pigment epithelium
Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution and changes of glycoconjugates of retinal photoreceptors during both pre- and postnatal development. Materials and Methods: Tissue sections from days 15 to 20 of Wistar rat embryos and 1 to 12 postnatal days of rat newborns including developing eye were prepared for lectinhistochemistry technique. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-label...
متن کاملPresumed choroidal atypical tuberculosis superinfected with cytomegalovirus retinitis in an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patient: a case report.
BACKGROUND To report an unusual case of multifocal choroidopathy with uveitis and cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) after initially presenting with pulmonary tuberculosis (Mycobacterium kansasii). CASE Slit-lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopic examination were done. Vitreous biopsy, pars plana vitrectomy, and retinal biopsy ...
